Here Is Some Trivia About Cruise Ships
My wife and I love vacations aboard cruise ships. We have cruised 18 times in 30 years of marriage, and we have scheduled number 19 for a week this fall.
I love cruise ships. Those floating cities that travel over 1,000 miles during a typical 7-day cruise are fully self contained.
So I got to thinking... how much fuel does a cruise ship burn on a typical 7-day cruise?
I Googled the topic and found some fascinating answers.
Cruise ships burn fuel oil, a low grade diesel fuel that sells for roughly $606 per ton. There are 265 gallons of fuel in a ton. A gallon of fuel oil costs roughly $2.28.
A mid-sized cruise ship in the 80,000-110,000 ton displacement range burns approximately 1,200 tons of fuel during a typical 7-day cruise. That works out to a fuel burn of 318,000 gallons of fuel, traveling at a best rate of fuel burn of 21 nautical miles per hour (knots).
A typical mid-sized ship will carry 3,900 passengers and 1,800 crew, for a total of 5,700 souls on board. Divide 5,700 souls into 318,000 gallons of fuel and you get 55.78 gallons of fuel burn for a typical 7-day cruise. 55.78 gallons of fuel per person multiplied by $2.28 per gallon, and you find that the cost of fuel per person on a 7 day cruise is $127.18. Not bad when you consider a typical cruise covers over 1,000 miles.
The Cunard ships, the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2, and Queen Victoria 2 are ocean liners, built to withstand the punishment of heavy seas crossing oceans. Their typical cruise speed is 32 knots.
The Queen Mary 2 gets a fuel burn of 40 feet per gallon of fuel oil. That works out to 132 gallons of fuel per mile.
The distance from the port in Southampton, England, to New York City is 3,190 miles. 3,190 miles at 132 gallons of fuel burn per mile adds up to 421,080 gallons of fuel at a cost of $960,062.00 voyage. The ship fully loaded would carry 2,620 passengers, and 1,253 crew for a total of 4,873 souls on board. Divide 4,873 souls on board into $960,062.00 fuel burn, and you get $197.01 fuel cost per person.
My take on the facts is that the cost of fuel per person is less than 25% of the price of a ticket. With the fuel economy shown above, it's no wonder that cruise lines are pumping out new ships as fast as the shipyards can build them.
